Amy Winehouse «Lioness: Hidden Treasures» [2011]

Amy Winehouse will probably be remembered as the best singer of the 21st century. Yet she was a frail woman, and died untimely, consumed by fame, drugs (mmmmh drugs), and the music industry.

Yeah the music industry. Those filthy bastards would like to exploit Amy even now that she rests in peace, making millions with this posthumous album. I say fuck them, and fuck money.

Unless she's actually having fun with the music heroes who pretend to be dead only to chill out and enjoy the good life, as explained by the best Italian band EVER.

I wish it was true. In the meantime, I listen to Amy's unique, unforgettable voice and - - - > cry.

Sade «Diamond Life» [1984]

According to bonghits4christ the music of Sade is ideal for dads in the company of their lady. The initiator of that unfortunate thread was instead suggesting the band is actually best enjoyed when stoned. But that applies to any kind of music, let me add.

Helen Folasade Adu aka Sade was, and probably still is, a premium pothead who used weed to fuel her creativity. Even though she claimed she had quit the habit in 1995 when pregnant of her daughter, 2 years later she was arrested in Jamaica. She had refused to bribe the local police, who caught her speeding in her car, which was packed with a few weed buds. She was officially charged, but no jail though, phew.

Back to Diamond Life, the band's debut album. Unbelievably it wasn't an immediate success. But today it sounds as fresh as a new release, and with a 2-hit combo like that straight at the beginning, you can be sure its now established fame will never fade away. And that sax, oh that sax!

Light up the blunt, summon your lady and - - - > enjoy.

Them Crooked Vultures «Them Crooked Vultures» [2009]

When 3 big shots of music get together it's hard not to quote them individually. Yet we'll try. Taken as a whole Them Crooked Vultures are a power trio making a sort of indefinite hard rock with virtuoso executions, exquisite choice of sounds, and a rhythm session that NEVER misses a beat.

Such a great amalgam comes from the long experience and refined taste of each of the band's member.

JPJ is a limey and comes from almost 50 years of great rock 'n roll. Dave Grohl is a sort of yankee Midas of music, and his compatriot Josh Homme has nonetheless defined a genre.

Wait a minute, something went wrong here, epic fail from ciotoni. Just enjoy the - - -> great music of Them Crooked Vultures.

X-Ray Spex «Germ Free Adolescents» [1978]

Non date retta alle etichette da supermercato: Patty Smith era una fricchettona che approfittò della rivoluzione punk. La vera voce femminile del movimento che annunciò la fine del futuro è stata Poly Styrene, cantante degli X-Ray Spex scomparsa lo scorso 25 aprile a soli 53 anni.
La band durò soli pochi anni (nel 1979 erà già tutto finito), ma ebbe tempo di confezionare la via femminile al punkrock nell'album manifesto «Germ Free Adolescents». Canzoni politicizzate, sghembe, melodiche e dissonanti, con la voce negra di Poly Styrene che dipinge un mondo distopico coaudivata da un sassofono sarcastico (una novità per il genere) e da una solida band.
Il mondo degli X-Ray Spex è il mondo asettico e di plastica, in cui le donne (e gli uomini) sono da carne da cannone per la guerra del mercato. Ma basta inforcare un bel paio di occhiali a raggi x per svelare l'inganno. Qui trovate l'edizione deluxe di quel disco. Con tanto di inediti e chicche nascoste nel baule.

Massive Attack «Heligoland» [2010]

The 2 genres that acquired a full maturity in the 1990s were grunge and trip-hop. Luckily no one at Massive Attack suffered from suicidal tendencies and we can all enjoy Heligoland, their 5th studio album release.

Ok there are no epochal anthems like in Protection or Mezzanine, but the elements that made Del Naja & co. famous and appreciated worldwide are all there: refined sounds, whispering hypnotic vocals and heavy bass lines.

Continuity and experimentation go hand in hand in Massive Attack's - - - > Heligoland.

Elias and His Zig Zag Jive Flutes «Tom Hark» [1958]

"Tom Hark": dall'Inghilterra al Sudafrica e ritorno. Forse l'avete sentita negli anni '80 rifatta dai Piranhas o se siete più avanti con gli anni ve la ricorderete per aver invaso le chart musicali nel 1958 grazie agli 'Elias and His Zig Zag Jive Flutes', oppure se amate il calcio inglese vi suonerà familiare in quanto presa in prestito da diverse firm del calcio britannico per supportare la loro squadra. Dovunque l'abbiate ascoltata non fa differenza e se è la prima volta che la ascoltate cambia poco, perché non riuscirete più a togliervela dalla testa. Per la cronaca va ricordato che il giro largo di questa hit ebbe inizio nel 1927 grazie all'attore inglese Herbert Farjeon che aveva scritto una canzone dal titolo "I've danced with a man, who's danced with a girl, who's danced with the Prince of Wales".

Noi proviamo a ripercorrere la storia di questo motivetto che ci piace tanto (Tom Hark per l'appunto) partendo dall'Ep del 1958 con gli - - - > 'Elias and His Zig Zag Jive Flutes' < - - - passando al video extra anni '80 dei Piranhas e chiudendo con il coro da stadio che inneggia al Pelè bianco.

Roots Manuva «Dub Come Save Me» [2002]

Mettiamola così: avete appena finito di ascoltare «Run Come Save Me» di Roots Manuva tutto d'un fiato (come è logico fare con un concept album) e ripartire da capo non vi basta. Vorreste qualcosa di più e vorreste che il piacere per le vostre orecchie durasse ancora a lungo.

Ecco quello che fa per voi: «Dub Come Save», versione rielaborata e corretta del secondo disco di Manuva  - che dopo quest "esperimento" ha fatto diventare un pratica abitale l'uscita di un secondo disco "dubbed"per ogni album pubblicato - secondo metriche e gusto dub. I suoni si fanno ancora più lunghi e dilatati, si raddoppiano e si moltiplicano (proprio come la sagoma di Manuva sulla copertina dell'album) tendendo verso l'infinito, il synth acido-liquido del riff di «Witness» stordisce ancora più piacevolmente passando da un canale all'altro.

Rispetto all'"originale" c'è qualche traccia in meno ma anche qualche novità, come il vocione di Chali2Na dei Jurassic 5 che ritorna ad accompagnare Roots in Revolution 5, oppure la track d'apertura «Man Fi Cool» che spinge prepontemente sul tasto repeat del vostro player.

La Lunga Notte dell'Orrore - di John Gilling, 1966

Ecco a voi un filmaccio del periodo d'oro della Hammer, versione doppiata in italiano, in qualità DVD.

Un malvagio capitalista di un paesino della Cornovaglia trova - dopo un misterioso viaggio ai Caraibi - il metodo definitivo per ottenere a costo zero risorse umane docili e non sindacalizzate per le sue miniere. Molto ben curato in ogni aspetto (ambientazioni, recitazione, costumi, effetti speciali) "The Plague of the Zombies", questo il titolo originale della pellicola, è un classico del filone zombie/voodoo.

Roots Manuva «Run Come Save Me» [2001]

Those who think hip hop is all about bitches and money are not completely wrong. But when you bump into the odd exception to the rule, the power of the genre becomes evident.

Run Come Save Me is one of the most evocative albums of the last, dreadful decade, even if it was released at the very beginning of it. Its dense soundscape, the angry vocals, and the meaningful lyrics, make it a must in the library of every non-fanatic consumer of music. The aficionados simply love it.

It features the single that is without doubt Rodney Hylton Smith's most famous and unmistakable chune: Witness (1 Hope), part of the OST of Children of Men, one of Slavoj Zizek's favorite films, and track number 2 of Lawkyz's 10 Years Of Big Dada Recordings compilation.

Kid Koala: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (2000)

Vogliamo esagerare, e anche se a qualcuno il paragone non piacerà, secondo noi Kid Koala è il Miles Davis del turntablism. Il buon Miles fece il percorso inverso nel 1992 sperimentando i suoni hip hop in Do Bop, Eric San (questo il suo vero nome) otto anni dopo trascinò i suoni del Jazz in un album suonato interamente con i giradischi. "Drunk Trumpet" è l'esempio più calzante a nostro favore: base standard e solo di tromba che grazie agli effetti sul pitch e a giochi a piatto spento si tramuta nel delirio di un trombettista ubriaco. Per la cronaca, Kid Koala è anche un ottimo illustratore e le copertine dei suoi dischi portano tutte la sua firma.

Judge Dread «King of Rudeness» [1989]

Alexander Minto Hughes, aka Judge Dread, was so rude and explicit he still holds the record of the highest number of songs banned from UK charts. Were he alive today, he could possibly be offered a post in Italy's government, or be invited to a bunga bunga party. But he would decline it, being a Working Class 'Ero.

Bouncer, bodyguard, DJ and eventually singer, Judge Dread ended up being the first white artist to have a hit record in Jamaica, where he even performed live.

Pussy, cock, fighting and booze, are the main topics of this collection, featuring some of Dread's best songs and cockney-accented covers of classic ska anthems.

Dr. Feelgood «Stupidity» [1976]

Come è noto, il Novecento è finito assieme al Futuro nel 1977. Prima di quell'anno, quando ancora il rock'n'roll era minacciato da sintonizzatori, parrucconi e assoli barocchi, i Dr. Feelgood anticipavano i tempi. Venivano da Canvey Island, avamposto di sale da gioco malfamate, stazioni balneari sottoproletarie e raffinerie. Indossavano gli abiti della festa e giocavano a fare i duri per tenere fede alla nomea della loro terra di provenienza. L'estuario del Tamigi era la versione industriale del delta del Missisippi, e i Dr. Feelgood interpretavano a modo loro il blues e il r'n'r. Davano il massimo soprattutto nei live, grazie gli spasmi nevrotici del chitarrista Wilko Johnson e alla voce negra di Lee Brilleaux. Folgorarono Joe Strummer sulla via dei Clash. Cercate il bel documentario che gli ha dedicato nel 2009 Julian Temple, "Oil City Confidential".
