Sade «Diamond Life» [1984]

According to bonghits4christ the music of Sade is ideal for dads in the company of their lady. The initiator of that unfortunate thread was instead suggesting the band is actually best enjoyed when stoned. But that applies to any kind of music, let me add.

Helen Folasade Adu aka Sade was, and probably still is, a premium pothead who used weed to fuel her creativity. Even though she claimed she had quit the habit in 1995 when pregnant of her daughter, 2 years later she was arrested in Jamaica. She had refused to bribe the local police, who caught her speeding in her car, which was packed with a few weed buds. She was officially charged, but no jail though, phew.

Back to Diamond Life, the band's debut album. Unbelievably it wasn't an immediate success. But today it sounds as fresh as a new release, and with a 2-hit combo like that straight at the beginning, you can be sure its now established fame will never fade away. And that sax, oh that sax!

Kid Loco «Kill your darlings» [2001]

Jean-Yves Prieur aka Kid Loco is one of the champions of that very peculiar sub-genre known as le trip hop, despite the lyrics in English language. Drug-inspired titles, classy loops, and sensual vocals are the constant refrains of his most famous work.

Beware, this release is highly addictive. Three Feet High Reefer alone will have you humming for ages, until the above-mentioned reefer shuts you down for a while.

Jean-Yves Prieur aka Kid Loco è uno dei campioni di quel particolare sottogenere noto come le trip hop, nonostante in testi in inglese. I titoli ispirati alla droga, loop di classe, e voci sensuali sono la costante della sua opera più famosa.

Attenzione, questo disco dà dipendenza. Three Feet High Reefer da sola vi farà canticchiare per secoli, fino a quando il cannone di cui sopra vi spegnerà per un po'.

Judge Dread «King of Rudeness» [1989]

Alexander Minto Hughes, aka Judge Dread, was so rude and explicit he still holds the record of the highest number of songs banned from UK charts. Were he alive today, he could possibly be offered a post in Italy's government, or be invited to a bunga bunga party. But he would decline it, being a Working Class 'Ero.

Bouncer, bodyguard, DJ and eventually singer, Judge Dread ended up being the first white artist to have a hit record in Jamaica, where he even performed live.

Pussy, cock, fighting and booze, are the main topics of this collection, featuring some of Dread's best songs and cockney-accented covers of classic ska anthems.

Alexander Minto Hughes, alias Judge Dread, era così rude ed esplicito, che detiene ancora oggi il record del più alto numero di canzoni bandite dalle radio inglesi. Robert Mitchum «Calypso Is Like So» [1957]

Robert Mitchum ha fatto una certa quantità di cose cool durante la sua vita. Espulso da ogni grado di scuola, arrestato per vagabondaggio e condannato ai lavori forzati nelle paludi della Georgia, evaso, pugile professionista, ghost writer per un astrologo, operaio in fabbrica e in miniera. In seguito, per darsi una regolata, decise di fare l'attore, divenendo l'icona dell'anti eroe nei più bei noir del cinema americano (su tutti, il capolavoro assoluto "Night of the Hunter").

Nel 1948 venne arrestato per possesso di Marijuana, sostanza di cui era abituale consumatore sin da adolescente. La sua reazione all'arresto (immortalata dalla foto a destra), è stata definita dal critico musicale Lester Bangs come uno dei semi dell'attitudine punk. Mitchum era anche un ottimo cantante (le parti canore dei suoi film non venivano mai doppiate): mentre girava le riprese del film "Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison" nell'isola caraibica di Tobago, si innamorò del calypso ragalandoci questo album, di gran lunga migliore di qualsiasi cosa registrata da Harry Belafonte.

Serge Gainsbourg «Aux armes et cetera» [1979]

Dopo aver sentito Beillusconi e Confalonìeri cimentarsi con la chanson francaise, Serge Gainsbourg decise che lui poteva darsi al ritmo in levare.

Il risultato è "il miglior disco reggae mai realizzato da un non jamaicano", parola di Sly Dunbar. Dell'epeca, aggiungiamo noi.
