Herman Melville «Moby Dick» - letto da Piero Baldini [2003]

E' davvero difficile venir fuori da questo libro. Dopo la lettura si passa ad altro, nell'illusione che "chiodo scacci chiodo". Niente da fare. Neanche le migliori letture successive riescono ad evitare che, di tanto in tanto, capiti di sentir urlare "Laggiù! Soffia! Soffia!".

Classico e sperimentale al tempo stesso, Moby Dick è un testo labirintico, costellato di complesse metafore e oscuri simbolismi. La grande Balena bianca salta oltre lo steccato del romanzo d'avventura per tuffarsi nell'ignoto.

L'audiolibro di oggi è probabilmente il miglior adattamento radiofonico in italiano del capolavoro di Melville. Si tratta delle registrazioni della trasmissione "Il Terzo Anello - Ad Alta Voce", in onda su Radio3 RAI nel 2003. La voce è dell'ottimo Piero Baldini, poliedrico attore teatrale e regista in numerose produzioni liriche.

Coleman Hawkins & Bud Powell «Hawk in Germany» [1960]

Pianist Bud Powell is heard in top form throughout this LP, playing six selections with his all-star trio (which also includes bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny Clarke) and three songs on which the trio is joined by the great tenor Coleman Hawkins. There is plenty of classic bebop throughout the concert performance with Powell mostly sticking to standards (along with his original “John’s Abbey”); Hawkins is best on “Stuffy.”

Hawk and Powell were far from their peak, but somehow this recording of old friends seems to generate a spark. Pettiford would have passed within 6 mos., Powell within 3 years, which is also when Hawkins quit recording and just took to the bottle. He hung on for another 9 years. Only Klook managed to survive the ravages of fame, quietly passing at 81.

But so much for back story, the lp is classic Black Lion production. Lots of standards, with the Powell Trio taking the mostly upbeat tracks with Bean joining for the second half, mostly ballads. This release is recommended as a fine example of the playing of these classic masters.

Un malvagio capitalista di un paesino della Cornovaglia trova - dopo un misterioso viaggio ai Caraibi - il metodo definitivo per ottenere a costo zero risorse umane docili e non sindacalizzate per le sue miniere. Molto ben curato in ogni aspetto (ambientazioni, recitazione, costumi, effetti speciali) "The Plague of the Zombies", questo il titolo originale della pellicola, è un classico del filone zombie/voodoo.

Sun Ra suona piano e tastiere e sfrutta timpani e percussioni per trasportare orchestra e spettatori verso altre galassie, alla ricerca di quella libertà negata da oltre un secolo alle popolazioni afro-americane.
